This attractive 19th century Staunton chess set is carved in natural and stained bone, following the design introduced by Nathaniel Cooke and popularised by Howard Staunton from the middle of the 19th century. The Staunton pattern soon became the international standard and remains the recognised tournament design to this day.
The quality of the carving is particularly evident in the knights. Each knight has been individually hand carved, displaying expressive heads with finely incised manes, carefully modelled mouths and well defined eyes, giving every piece its own distinctive character. The rooks are crisply carved with well defined battlements, while the bishops retain deep mitre cuts and the king and queen display elegant, well balanced proportions.
