A Swiss late 19th century Black Forest inkstand, finely carved with a standing deer and signed
The deer is naturalistically carved, with careful attention given to its alert expression, slender body, antlers and the texture of its coat. It stands within a woodland setting above the inkstand, surrounded by realistically carved branches, leaves and rocky details.
The composition combines a practical writing accessory with a finely executed animal sculpture. The deep carving and careful modelling create a strong sense of movement and depth, while the warm patina accentuates the detail of the wood.
Although traditionally known as “Black Forest” carving, pieces of this type were principally produced in Switzerland, particularly in the Brienz region, where highly skilled woodcarvers created naturalistic animals and decorative objects for wealthy European travellers.
